Team News –
Georgia Allen starts to make her full debut, Maddie Biggs replaced Natasha Thomas for her first start of the season. Maria Boswell’s performance last week earned her place in Joe Sheehan’s starting 11.
Match Changes –
Due to heavy rain overnight and during the day, a pitch inspection at the Goldstar Ground ruled the game could not be played and was moved to the Ipswich Town Playford Road Training Ground which meant no fans could attend due to Covid 19 restrictions. True Blue members were provided with a livestream to watch the game online.
Key Events –
One of the standout points of this game is the 3rd Clean Sheet in 3 games for the Tractor Girls, yet to concede a single goal. It didn’t take long, 2 minutes in fact, for Town to take the lead when Georgia Allen got on the end of Anna Grey’s cross to nod home past the Cambridge City keeper.
City’s Full Backs struggled to keep tabs on Ipswich’s wingers as Sophie Peskett and Anna Grey repeatedly got beyond their makers and got the ball into the danger areas. Sophie Peskett’s cuts inside caused problems as the winger looked to get her name on the scoresheet for the second time in a week.
Anna Grey got Ipswich’s second goal after a Pagie Peake shot was fumbled by the Cambridge keep and Grey was there to tap home the rebound to get her first of the season. Anna come close again in the second half just before the full time whistle.
The Tractor Girls went in at the break 2 goals up but could have been more as the opposition back line struggled to contain the Ipswich Town onslaught.
The wet weather conditions didn’t seem to phase Ipswich as 10 minutes into the second half, Paige Peake ventured forward during a Town attack, the ball fell to the edge of the box after a scrambled clearance and the Ipswich Centre Half placed the ball into the bottom corner to give Ipswich a 3-0 lead.
Lindsey Cooper come close when she headed Paige Peake’s corner onto the crossbar just after the hour mark.
75 minutes in and Ipswich were award a penalty which Paige Peake calmly dispatched to give Ipswich their 3rd win in 3 games.
The Ups and Downs –
Only downside today was the disappointment of fans being unable to attend due to Covid restrictions on the Training Ground.
Upside, Ipswich are now top of the league with 3 wins from their opening 3 games and 3 clean sheets to match. Paige Peake in now the top scorer with 3 goals to her name and, new signing, Georgia Allen got her first goal just 2 minutes into her full debut.
Ipswich look just as good, if not stronger, than they were last season with the threat down the wings from Anna Grey and Sophie Peskett causing defenders nightmares.
Joe’s Words –
Ipswich Manager, Joe Sheehan, was obviously delighted following his teams dominant display, despite the late change to the game due to the weather. Talking to Media Officer, Kieran Standley, after the game, Joe said he was happy with the team and another clean sheet.
“It’s good to get another 3 points on the board, it’s up to us now to keep building on that going forward”
“It’s testament really to the prep we do in terms of how we want to operate and play”
Player Of The Match –
Another tricky choice this one but we decided on Abbie Lafayette. Abbie was brilliant and controlled the centre of the pitch, taking back possession and distributing the ball to her teammates around her. The young centre mid played some clinical through balls in behind the defence for Anna Grey and Sophie Peskett to run onto and was really calm under pressure from the opposition. There was nothing getting past her today, multiple times she won the ball back and quickly closed down the Cambridge midfield to stop their attack.
Abbie was among a number of players that could have taken this from the game. Honourable mentions to Captain Eva Hubbard and winger Anna Grey who were also in with a shout today.
